The Sagrada Familia Church is a monumental structure begun on 19 March, 1882, based on plans by diocesan architect Paula del Villar (1828-1901).
In late 1883 Gaudí was charged with continuing the work, a labour which he did not abandon until his death in 1926. Since then various architects have carried on with the work, following Gaudi's original plans.
The building is located in the centre of Barcelona. Over the years it has become one of the country and city’s most universal icons. Millions of visitors flock to it every year, many of them to study its architectural and religious content.
The church has always depended upon charity, being built with donations going all the way back to its origins 129 years ago About this aspect Gaudí himself once said: “The Sagrada Family is made by the people and is reflected in them. It is a work which lies is in the hands of God and the will of the people.” Construction continues and may be finished during the first third of the 21st century.
